A membership expires while a customer still has access to a previously purchased resource. A single on/off flag may not represent the business policy.

List the entitlements

Identify what membership provides: content, booking privileges, community access or staff services. Decide what happens during a trial, failed renewal, cancellation and recovery.

Keep the policy understandable to support staff. They should be able to explain why access changed and which agreement or payment event supports it.

Plan temporary exceptions

If staff can grant an extension, record the reason and expiry where appropriate. Define how it interacts with later billing events so an automatic update does not unexpectedly remove or indefinitely preserve access.

Test a member with more than one product, a delayed payment result and a repeated notification. Provider billing capabilities and legal terms require review for the actual setup.

A membership project should include the access rules, customer wording and support guide alongside the account screens. Bring your real policy and the awkward cases. The software can then implement decisions the business has made rather than inventing them through a convenient database flag.

Let support inspect access for one member without changing it. A read-only explanation of the current entitlement can resolve questions more safely than an unrestricted override button.
